CRA Payroll Source Deductions: Online Payment Guide

For Canadian businesses with employees, Payroll Source Deductions are a critical recurring tax obligation. To help employers complete their CRA payments efficiently, we have compiled the following standard operating procedure.

  1. I. Accessing the Payment Portal
  1. 1. Visit the Government of Canada’s tax services section: https://www.canada.ca/en/services/taxes.html
  2. 2. On the services page, click the link for “Make a payment to the CRA” to enter the payment guidance page.
  1. 3. Read the instructions and click “Make a payment” to begin the payment process.
  1. II. Selecting Payment Method
  1. 1. On the payment options page, select “Debit card” as your payment method.
  2. 2. Important Note: Please ensure you use a debit card featuring a Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard logo. As of September 10, 2024, the CRA no longer accepts standard Interac debit cards for direct online payments.
  3. 3. Click the “Pay now using My Payment” button to enter the secure electronic payment system.

III. Entering Payment Details

The system will guide you through a six-step process. Please follow these steps:

  1. 1. Select Payment Type: Under the “Businesses” category, select “Payroll source deductions.”
  1. 2. Specify Payment Allocation: Select the appropriate category based on your business needs (e.g., “Regular remittance” for monthly payments).
  1. 3. Input Filing Details: Accurately enter the following required information:
    • Account number: Enter your full Payroll account number (ending in RP).
    • Gross payroll: Enter the total gross wages paid to employees for the period.
    • Number of employees: Enter the total number of employees for the period.
    • Period end: Select the month corresponding to the payment period.
    • Amount: Confirm the total amount of tax to be remitted.
  1. 4. Click “Next” to proceed to the confirmation page.
  1. IV. Confirmation and Execution
  2. 1. Review Information: On the “Payment details – confirmation” page, carefully verify the account number, gross payroll, and the payment amount.
  3. 2. Confirm Payment: Click “Confirm and proceed to pay” to be redirected to the secure banking interface.
  1. 3. Payment Method: Again, please note that the CRA business payment portal currently only accepts debit cards with a Visa or Mastercard logo.
  1. 4. Complete Transaction: Enter your card details on the final page and click “Pay” to complete the transaction.
  1. V. Saving Your Receipt
  1. 1. Once the payment is successful, you will be redirected to the “Transaction approved” page.
  2. 2. Important: Be sure to click the “Print” or “Save” button at the top right of the page. Keep this record, which includes the transaction number, in your corporate financial files as valid proof of your tax remittance.
